How To Save 50% on Speedy Home Internet Service

We recently moved into an apartment. As a result we had to figure out how we were going to get internet service. After all, the baby needs her Dave and Ava on YouTube and mommy needs her Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix. What about me? I’m forever a fan of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, but I have the DVDs of that show so I’m good. Actually, internet does help keep BrotherFI.com going and stay connected to you all. The problem is getting low cost, good internet and the path to financial independence and early retirement means you keep present costs as low as possible. If you’re not careful you can end up paying quite a bit to stay connected and have these perks.  This is why I am going to present how you can save 50% on speedy home internet service.

Shop Around

Just like you should any other purchase you want to shop internet service providers. AT&T, Comcast Xfinity and others are all competing to win your business and this is to your advantage. By shopping around you ensure that you’ll get the best service for the best price. We were paying about $54 per month with AT&T where we were living prior and after moving we decided to go with Comcast Xfinity. Both AT&T and Comcast are providers for the apartment complex we recently moved into, but it turned out Comcast was cheaper. Actually 50% cheaper. We would never have known if we didn’t shop the two providers.

Buy Your Own Router/Modem Combo

Nowadays with Youtube University and DIY websites you need to go ahead and get your own router/modem combo. You’ll find internet providers trying to get you to lease or rent a modem and/or a router. I’ve seen prices as high as $11/month on top of your monthly bill. By the end of 12 months you’ve paid $132 for something you don’t get to keep? No thank you! A bunch of my tech buddies recommended various kinds of router/modem combos. I did some research and went with the NETGEAR C6220-100NAS Router/Modem Combo. This was about $108, but you can get cheaper options that still perform pretty well. You can check out other choices that are $50-$100 and are all decent enough. Remember, get a router/modem combo.

Self Installation

Getting your own device is not the only way to save some cash. When we signed up for Comcast Xfinity we had two options to do self-installation or pay Comcast a one-time fee of $60. You can already tell which option we opted for. Self installation was surprisingly quick and easy. Comcast was scheduled to complete our installation 4 or 5 days from the time the order was placed. I ended up driving down the road to the Comcast Xfinity store and picked up the free installation kit. Then I came home and within 5 minutes I was online.

Sign Up for E-Bill

Another way to save 50% on speedy home internet service is to sign up for electronic billing. I normally do not like automating my payments, but I couldn’t resist the $5 per month savings with Comcast. That’s another $60 saved for the year.

How Much Do You Really Save?

So after all is said and done, how much will we save? Well after doing the math I estimate that we’ll save 47.5% by doing everything I just listed. The beauty of all these actions is the low level of difficulty. You can definitely accomplish all of this pretty easily and if you have any questions or comments feel free to make yourself heard below. You can definitely save 50% on speedy home internet service if you apply these principles. Remember that any little bit you save today is going to be a lot you can spend later.
